What is Portus 2008?

In a word: Mystery! This Harry Potter symposium welcomes scholars and fans of all origins to explore the mysteries and questions buried in J.K. Rowling’s novels. Anyone who wishes to deepen their knowledge of and appreciation for the books, explore their influence on our culture, or simply bask in one of the largest and most influential fan followings ever assembled will find a home at Portus. By combining the elements of an academic conference and a fan convention, Portus will offer an opportunity to investigate, deconstruct, discuss, and illustrate these future classics in the company of fellow enthusiasts. Set to the theme of the Department of Mysteries, Portus focuses on what’s behind the rotating doors as eager fans and scholars examine what has been hinted at and foreshadowed through symbolism and other means in the Harry Potter novels.

What are the dates of Portus 2008?

Portus 2008 will begin the afternoon of Thursday, July 10 and will run through Sunday, July 13, 2008. All four days will be packed with formal and informal programming, games and other activities, art displays and more.

Where will Portus 2008 be held?

Since everything is bigger in Texas, we're holding Portus in Dallas at the immensely beautiful Hilton Anatole, located just north of downtown Dallas – 19 miles from Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and four miles from Love Field. With the Cowboys on our side, any invading giants or trolls will surely keep well away!

Who can attend Portus 2008?

Portus welcomes all intellectually apt and inquisitive Harry Potter scholars and fans, whether or not their beards yet reach the floor. There are certain restrictions for legal reasons, however. Anyone who has turned 18 as of July 10, 2008, is welcome to attend on their own. Anyone between the ages of 14 and 17 as of July 10, 2008, is welcome to attend with a registered parent or guardian, or a chaperone, provided that a parental permission slip appointing the chaperone has been signed and notarized. Like past HPEF symposia, Portus is a geared towards an adult audience, and parents should be advised that some programming may contain mature themes and language.

With whom is Portus 2008 associated?

Portus 2008 is an official HP Education Fanon, Inc. event. Past events include Nimbus-2003, The Witching Hour, Lumos, and Prophecy. Neither HP Education Fanon, Inc., nor Portus 2008 has any other associations. This conference is not endorsed, sanctioned or any other way supported, directly or indirectly, by Warner Bros. Entertainment, the Harry Potter book publishers, or J.K. Rowling and her representatives.

Will any programming be open to family members of attendees?

No, only registered attendees may attend Portus 2008 events.

Will I be sorted into a House?

No. Most people have their own preferences for what House they belong in, and we respect their choices. If you wish, you may select your House, or lack thereof, when you register for Portus.
