About PortusF.A.Q. Cast of OrganizersFor the MediaHPEF

After waiting more than two years for the seventh and final installment of one of the world's most beloved series, Harry Potter fans will have much to talk about in 2008. With the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, questions will be answered, theories will be put to the test, and undoubtedly, further mysteries will emerge for eager fans. There will be no better place to dissect these mysteries and discuss this new-found knowledge than the next HPEF conference, Portus 2008. Dallas, Texas will play host to academics and fanatics alike for four insightful days of literary analysis and discussion.

As the fifth gathering of its kind for Harry Potter fans across the globe, Portus' academic presentations, workshops, and roundtable discussions are only the beginning of the fun. Attendees will have the opportunity to set aside their school robes and immerse themselves in true fandom frivolity. Extra-curricular activities will include Wizard Rock concerts and a Yule Ball worthy of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and of course, the ever-popular (and ever-competitive) Quidditch tournament.

Portus Press Policies

All media representatives are welcome to attend Portus 2008 and cover its events. Press passes will be available that will guarantee admittance to all events and programming offered by Portus 2008, but will not provide the participation benefits that come with registration. If you’d like to arrange for those benefits, such as meals, a conference t-shirt, etc., please include that in your request. Representatives from Harry Potter fan publications and websites are also welcome; however, only two representatives from each site will be exempt from registration fees.

We appreciate pre-arrangement of press passes, as that will allow our registration team to have a badge and program schedule ready upon your arrival. If you are not able to pre-arrange a pass, please bring a business card with your name, editorial title, and media outlet's logo and one of the
following:

  • A copy of a current masthead, which clearly displays your name and title;
  • A bylined article written by you and published within the last 12 months; or
  • A letter on company letterhead from a publisher, editor, or producer stating that you are covering Portus 2008 for their entity.

Story Ideas

Just as with Portus 2008’s predecessors, the conference will bring together fans who have only ever known each other online. The Internet community of Harry Potter fans, known to most as the fandom, is a prolific and powerful force, where people of all ages develop theories, write stories, discuss the latest news, and more. Portus 2008 is a perfect example of the power of fandom — the conference is being organized almost entirely online, through volunteers from across the globe. Only a handful of the top organizers have met in person. We think that makes Portus 2008 a unique fan event and part of the growing trend toward a Web-driven society.

For any videotaping, filming, or recording of any manner that will be used for commercial purposes, you must first obtain permission from Portus 2008 and comply with our restrictions about the foregoing.
